Book Discussion: The Worst Hard Time

Worst Hard TimeSaturday, August 29th, 4:00 PM.

The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. Discussion leader: Thomas Prasch, Washburn University.

Egan describes the first of the new storms that would come to define the Dust Bowl: “Wasn’t a sandstorm…. And it wasn’t a hailstorm, thou it certainly brought with it a dark, threatening sky…. It rolled, like a mobile hill of crud, and it was black.” Egan provides a masterful overview of the dust storms and their consequences for agriculture and people on the Great Plains.

Copies of all books are available for check-outs at the front desk. Sponsored by the Dodge City Public Library and the Kansas Humanities Council.

Serving Dodge City for 125 years!

The Salvation Army in Dodge City has been serving the needs of many of the Dodge City residents for 125 years. Throughout these years they have helped many families by providing clothing, food and other needs they might have. One of their services to families is a food pantry where families in need of food items can select canned goods and nonperishable items to feed their families. Currently their food pantry is nearly empty and in need of being restocked.

Dodge City Public Library is working with the Salvation Army to restock the pantry. The library will be collecting canned items and other nonperishable items throughout the month of August. Items especially needed are those staples such as any kind of pasta, canned tuna or chicken, and pancake mix. Help us help the Salvation Army help others. Our goal is 125 items for 125 years. But wouldn’t it be great if we could double that amount and have 250 items for 125 years?
